Once, Linköping was considered a city on the water. And we aim to earn that title again. New homes have been built along the Stångån River/Kinda Canal in the central part of the city. The Göta Canal and Lakes Roxen and Rängen are waters around the city where there's plenty to see and do. Year round!
Until 1970 Linköping had its own port, and was in fact one of Sweden's biggest lakeside ports in the early 20th century. It saw plenty of trade in fish and alcohol. Grains and lumber were transported along the Stångån/Kinda Canal from the south of the province.
The Göta and Kinda Canals meet in Lake Roxen just north of town - and our municipality has the most locks of any in Sweden. The closest ones are just a short walk from downtown. The two canals are quite different in nature. You can easily walk and bicycle alongside Sweden's Blue Ribbon, the Göta Canal, while the Kinda Canal is lined with more inaccessible country, so your canalside walks are mainly confined to the central parts of the city.
Of course both are perfect for boating, in your own vessel or on a tour boat. Plying the Kinda Canal, you come into contact with a giant lake system, including the Rängen lakes. And on the Göta Canal the lake you see is the Roxen.
Let's take a closer look!
