Information at the organizer

In the late 1990s, siblings Jarl and Eddie grow up in a rundown castle in Skåne. Jarl dreams of glamour, something he desperately lacks among dirty farmers and inbred rural folks. His little sister Eddie dreams that her brother will want to hang out with her.

When their father, the elusive baron Carl-Jan, one day walks out the door never to return, their mother Monica, who has her own perception of reality, loses her footing. While Monica locks herself in the bedroom to wallow in self-pity, she lets her children bring order to the chaos. It doesn’t go very well. Jarl becomes unpredictable and self-aggrandizing while drawing inspiration from prescription drugs and the new millennium’s aestheticized film violence. Eddie, on her part, gropes for closeness in the shadow of her unbounded brother and spiritual mother. But when the past begins to haunt and death makes its entry, everything changes. Money is to be divided, family ties put to the test, and suddenly murder could be an interesting way to break ingrained patterns.

Tone Schunnesson’s new novel “Ultravåld” is about inheritance, trauma, and loyalty. About the bonds of siblinghood and parents who go berserk. About the difference between saving someone and destroying someone. About beauty and violence instead of reconciliation.

Tone Schunnesson, born in 1988, debuted with the critically acclaimed “Tripprapporter” (2016), followed by the novel “Dagarna, dagarna, dagarna” (2020), which was also praised by critics and became a big sales success. She writes regularly for Aftonbladet and lives in Stockholm.

The program is conducted by the non-profit association Bokstödet ideell förening, which is a friend association to Linköpings bokhandel.
