Joseph Haydn probably could not imagine that one day it would be possible to travel to the moon. Nevertheless, he wrote an opera about life there. But actually, it was just a joke by a lovesick amateur astronomer to marry the daughter of a curious older man. He was fooled in any case, and of course, the opera ends happily. Here you hear the overture.
Real love, however, is what Arnold Schönberg’s wonderfully beautiful Verklärte Nacht from 1899 is about. An enamored couple walks together in the moonlight. They talk about a difficult dilemma, but in the brilliant moonlight, it is love that conquers all.
Surely we have all at some point looked up at the night sky and tried to find planets and constellations among the chaos of stars. After a discussion about astrology with his friends, Gustav Holst was inspired to write his great work The Planets. All the planets in our solar system (except Pluto) are described based on their character, but also from their astrological aspect. The titles of each movement give a clue to this; March – the Bringer of War, Venus – the Bringer of Peace, Uranus – the Magician etc. The work has become one of the most beloved in the British repertoire, and parts have also appeared in many films.
