Pilgrimage from Linköping to Vadstena
Are you looking for a hiking experience beyond the ordinary? Then a pilgrimage might be just the thing for you! The St. Birgitta Ways pilgrimage route passes through Linköping with its final destination in Vadstena and the majestic Monastery Church.
The stretch between Linköping and Vadstena is a beautiful and easy-to-hike route, ideal for first-time pilgrims. The trail follows the Östgötaleden path from Linköping Cathedral through Vreta Abbey, continuing along what we consider the most picturesque section of the Göta Canal. The total distance is 72 km, which can conveniently be divided into four stages, allowing you to complete the journey in four days while staying at pilgrim-friendly accommodations along the way.

What is St. Birgitta Ways?
St. Birgitta Ways is the collective name for all pilgrimage routes leading to Vadstena, with the goal of eventually connecting major pilgrimage destinations in the Nordic countries (Trondheim and Turku) and the rest of Europe. The route is named after one of Sweden’s most famous figures, Saint Birgitta, and leads to Vadstena abbey, the monestary church, where her relics are preserved.
St. Birgitta Ways is open to everyone who wishes to embark on a pilgrimage to and from Vadstena, regardless of background or purpose. The trails vary from steep wilderness paths through dense forests to winding gravel roads across diverse plains. Almost every day’s hike passes by various bodies of water, inviting you to take a swim or a break. Multiple times a day, you can rest in a cool church, experience tranquility, and feel the echoes of history.
