Right of Public Access
Do you enjoy spending time in nature? Then there are a few simple rules to follow. The Right of Public Access, unique to Sweden and a few other countries, allows us to enjoy and explore Swedish nature. However, it comes with both rights and responsibilities, which is why it’s important to adhere to the basic rule: “Do not disturb, do not destroy.” Enjoy hiking, cycling, camping, berry and mushroom picking, or kayaking, but remember to respect nature, landowners, wildlife, private property, and other people. Some environments, such as private areas, should be avoided, but there’s plenty more to enjoy.
Important Reminders!
While enjoying the Right of Public Access and the freedom to be in nature, don’t forget your responsibility to leave the place as you found it—or better. Keep these points in mind:
- Do not leave trash in nature to avoid harming wildlife, the environment, and other visitors.
- Avoid disturbing or harming animals.
- Do not drive cars, motorcycles, or mopeds in nature; stick to roads, trails, and designated areas for your vehicle.
- Respect private property by not camping near homes or in areas where it could disturb the natural environment.
- Do not cut down or damage living trees.
With the Right of Public Access, we have the opportunity to camp in nature. It’s important to choose your campsite carefully to avoid disturbing wildlife or private landowners. When building a fire, it’s crucial to select a location where the fire won’t spread or damage the ground. Avoid lighting fires directly on large rocks or cliffs, as they can crack. The best practice is to use designated fire pits whenever possible. During the summer, when the risk of wildfires is higher, be aware that fire bans may be in place in certain areas.
The Right of Public Access applies both on land and water, and just as on land, you must respect your surroundings when on the water. If you plan to be on the water, it’s important to be aware of the rules and regulations that apply to the specific waters you’re navigating. According to maritime law, you are allowed to go ashore, swim, and anchor near the shoreline, as long as you do not enter private property. Special rules also apply in national parks and nature reserves, where restrictions may include keeping a certain distance from bird or seal protection areas.
The forest is full of wonderful resources, and with the Right of Public Access, you are free to eat and pick as much as you like. However, it’s important to be aware of which mushrooms and flowers are protected, as some species are endangered and cannot be picked.
There are plenty of great hiking trails and excellent options for discovering nature by bike, but remember to adapt your hiking or cycling to the environment. You must avoid crossing private property, plantations, or land that could be damaged.
