Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera is a gripping tale of the power of love and humanity’s longing for freedom. In a dark prison outside Seville, Leonore struggles to save her husband Florestan, who is held captive by the brutal governor Pizarro. Disguised as the young man Fidelio, she takes a job as a prison guard and dares the impossible – to defy authority in the name of truth.

Beethoven’s opera combines dramatic intensity with a deeply humanistic vision and was written during a turbulent time in Europe – the premiere coincided with Napoleon’s occupation of Vienna. Beethoven revised the opera several times – from three acts to two, and with three different overtures – before the final version achieved its breakthrough in 1814.
The music oscillates between quiet intimacy and grand triumph: from the tender arias to the powerful freedom chorus, where light emerges from darkness. Fidelio is more than an opera – here, love and justice, courage and hope converge in a manifestation for human freedom. When the prison gates open at the end, it feels as if all of humanity exhales. Beethoven makes us believe in the triumph of good – and in humanity’s ability to change the world.

The bag ban no longer applies to Konsert & Kongress, Saab Arena, and Stångebrofältet.
However, we recommend bringing a smaller bag – preferably no larger than 40 x 40 x 20 cm – to facilitate entry and storage. Bags may be searched at the entrance.

Linköping Concert & Congress is centrally located in Linköping, a short walk from the Travel Center. You can easily and environmentally friendly get here by bus or commuter train, see www.ostgotatrafiken.se www.ostgotatrafiken.se for timetables. From many parts of the city, it is also within walking distance to us.
