How could so many people be killed for crimes that didn’t even exist? Historian Dick Harrison tells about the rise and development of the great witch trials.

During the early Middle Ages, Europe’s learned men perceived witchcraft and sorcery as superstition, and the risk of being convicted for such crimes was small. But then something happened. In the 15th century, actual epidemics of witch persecutions began to spread, first in the Alpine countries and then in the rest of Western Europe. Scandinavia was reached in the mid-16th century, and then the belief in witches and demons hung like a dark shadow over us until the 18th century, with thousands of casualties.

Why? How could so many people be killed for crimes that didn’t even exist?

Dick Harrison portrays the rise and development of the great witch trials, which also affected Östergötland severely.

Dick Harrison is a professor of history at Lund University and has written over a hundred books on Swedish and international history. He is a columnist in Svenska Dagbladet and writes regularly in Populär Historia. He is also known as an expert on TV and radio.
