Guided Tours & Cruises

From idea to reality with a spade and von Platen’s persistence – a guided tour of the Göta Canal

Information at the organizer

Already Bishop Brask and Gustav Vasa had thoughts of a canal through Sweden – but the technology and knowledge were lacking.

During the 18th century, locks began to be built past waterfalls, which interested Baltzar von Platen. By 1810, he had convinced the king and the parliament of the importance of a canal, and work could begin. Join a walk around the harbor basin in Berg and take part in the history of the diggers and the foundation of Sweden’s technical and industrial development.

Two locks are passed along the way, at the top of the lock staircase and above the hostel.

Starting point: Slussportsutställningen, Berg’s locks
