Medieval city walk with Linköping’s guide club.

Linköping has a long history, from the early 1100s. King Magnus Ladulås established a Franciscan monastery at the current Hospitalstorget in 1287, and this is when Linköping is considered to have become a city. In the city center, there are still some places where we see traces from the early Middle Ages. Our first city seal is from 1300 and depicts a lion, likely taken from King Magnus’s heraldic arms – a legacy that has remained since then.

The medieval House of Bjälbo, with its seat in Bjälbo outside Skänninge (also known as the House of Folkung), has played a crucial role in Linköping’s medieval history. It extends up to and including our last Catholic bishop, Hans Brask, who promptly leaves the country when Gustav Vasa and Sweden abandon Catholicism at the Riksdag in Västerås in 1527.
