Romeo & Juliet is a deeply human story about the first, transformative infatuation and the devastating consequences of blind hatred – about duality, and about war and peace.
The conflict between the Capulet and Montague families rages in the streets of Verona. What the feud is about, or why honor is at stake, is forgotten. Still, the city’s two most powerful families continue to hate each other and the violence escalates.
Romeo and Juliet know that their love is forbidden, but nothing in the world can keep them apart. It is their burning love that ultimately makes the world tremble when it challenges the prevailing order. In the young people’s longing for each other – and for freedom – their secret marriage becomes a rebellious act and a brave sacrifice.
In director Emma Roswall’s interpretation, the mystique and timeless symbols are highlighted in a visually beautiful stage setting. As in all plays by William Shakespeare, the story moves between extremes: from the comedy of everyday life and grotesque turmoil to heavenly states that carry the promise that life is greater than you imagine.
