Göta Canal with your own boat, 2024

Göta canal is open for boat traffic 7 May – 27 September, 2024, but Berg locks is worth a visit all year round.

Ship ahoy! If you have your own leisure boat, you simply must travel at your own pace along the Göta Canal at least once in your life. Imagine bobbing along with the waves at a few knots, enjoying the tranquillity of this lovely harbour, then dropping anchor so you can discover all the exciting attractions Linköping has to offer!

If you would like to travel with your own boat along the Göta Canal, you will need a canal ticket. The pricing varies depending on the size of your boat, how long you plan to be on the canal and the dates you plan to travel.

Cruise ships on Göta canal – Berg locks

Watching the cruise ships being lifted up or down the large Carl Johan staircase is a magical experience. Berg locks attracts many spectators and, if you’re lucky, you’ll see one of the classic canal boats Wilhelm Tham, Diana or Juno making their way up or down the Göta canal.

But the best way to experience Göta canal is from the water. Why not take a cruise on the beautiful Berg to Borensberg stretch? The cruise takes about 3.5 hours one way. You can make the return journey by boat, bus or bicycle. If you don’t have your own bike, you can rent one at Kaffeteriet in Borensberg and Berg.

M/S Wasa Lejon operates the route Berg locks – Borensberg – Berg locks (departs at 10.00 from Berg) from 11 May – 13 Sep 2023.

The passenger boat M/B Stockholm was added in Linköping during the 2022 boating season. The boat line links Linköping’s two canals, the Göta canal and  the Kinda canal, and makes it possible to get between Berg locks and the Linköping centre waterway. The boat offers three tours:

– Berg locks to Linköping city (75 min)
– Linköping city to Berg locks (75 min)
– Guided tour in Linköping (approx. 60 min)
