Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 – Norrköping Symphony Orchestra
- Linköping Konsert & Kongress
- Organizer: Norrköpings Symfoniorkester
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (1900–1901) is one of the most beloved and frequently performed works in the Romantic piano repertoire. For Rachmaninoff, the concerto was an artistic rebirth: after several years of depression and creative crisis, caused by the catastrophic reception of his first symphony, he was redeemed with the help of hypnosis and therapy from Dr. Nikolai Dahl. Rachmaninoff regained his confidence, and the result was a flowing, inspired work full of power and sincerity.

Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 was composed in 1944 – in the midst of World War II, in a Soviet Union marked by both patriotism and oppression. Prokofiev described the symphony as “a hymn to the noble spirit of the free and happy man.” Yet, the music contains a clear political duality: under the official optimism, there vibrates a strand of irony, sorrow, and ambivalence.
Djuro Zivkovic’s music has been commissioned by prominent ensembles and concert halls such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Klangforum Wien. The Swedish-Serbian composer Djuro Zivkovic has a strong connection to his Orthodox faith, whose mysticism and spirituality are central elements in his artistic work. Meditation and texts from the Orthodox, mystical text collection Philokalia have been the starting point for several of Zivkovic’s works. At this concert, we experience the premiere of Noosphere Exists, all under the leadership of the internationally active Swedish conductor Christian Karlsen.
