Maurice Ravel’s enchanted Mother Goose (Ma mère l’Oye, 1908) begins this evening and takes us straight into an animated fairytale world. Ravel initially wrote the suite for the siblings Mimi and Jean Godebski, whose parents were among Ravel’s closest friends. In 1912, he reorchestrated the work into a ballet, from which Ravel also derived the famous orchestral suite, where we encounter fairy tale characters such as Beauty and the Beast, Tom Thumb, and the enchanted Sleeping Beauty. In Le jardin féerique, the suite’s swooning, beautiful finale, we hear what it sounds like when the prince awakens the sleeping Sleeping Beauty from her slumber.
After Sibelius’s first two national romantic symphonies, Symphony No. 3 represents something of a stylistic break. Here Sibelius seeks a more classical expression; the music contains nods to an older aesthetic. Perhaps it was this stylistic searching that made the symphony take nearly three years to complete. It was fully finished only a few days before its premiere in 1907.

However, we recommend bringing a smaller bag – preferably no larger than 40 x 40 x 20 cm – to facilitate entry and storage. Bags may be searched at the entrance.

From many parts of the city, it is also within walking distance to us.
