Berg locks - Göta Canal
The Berg Locks are Göta Canal’s biggest attraction – the Carl Johan staircase, with its 7 connected locks. It is quite a performance to see the boats navigate the stairs, fascinating many spectators. If you are lucky you may see one of the vintage canal boats Wilhelm Tham, Diana or Juno negotiating the locks.
The Berg Locks are a perfect excursion with their unique locks and beautiful views. In the area there are restaurants, cafés, ice-cream kiosks, shops, adventure golf, cycle rental, swimming spots, hostels etc. In summer there are a multitude of additional activities and events on offer.
The Göta Canal is open to boat traffic 11th May – 15th September 2019, but Berg Locks is worth a visit at any time of year.

Cruising on the Göta Canal
The Göta Canal should be experienced from the water. Why not take a cruise along the beautiful stretch of canal between Berg - Borensberg? The cruise takes about 3.5 hours. The return trip can be made with the boat, by bus or on a bicycle.
M/S Wasa Lejon cruises between Berg Locks - Borensberg – Berg Locks (leaving at 10.00 from Berg) during the period 11th May-15th Sep.
In addition to these two passenger boats this stretch of canal is also cruised by the vintage passenger boats M/S Diana, M/S Wilhelm Tham and M/S Juno. Their tours are between 2-6 days in length. It is not however possible to start the journey at Berg Locks
Tourist attractions and Activities
Carl-Johan Lock Staircase
The Carl-Johan lock staircase comprises seven connected locks that raise the boats 18.8 metres. The other locks in the area are called Oscar and Berg. In total the boats are raised 29.1 meters in the Berg Locks.
Göta’s Café & Adventure Golf
Today there is a super modern and architect designed construction with the surrounding lock area as a theme.
Tours of Berg Locks
Linköping guide club will conduct certain scheduled hikes in Berg Locks during summer 2016. If you want to book a group guide for another time, it is possible to do this.
Vreta Kloster Kyrka (Monastery Church) and ruin
Group guiding is booked at the Vreta Kloster pastor’s office, tel: 013-636 58. The guided tour costs SEK 40.00/person (minimum SEK 500.00), one group leader free, for more than 30 people, 2 group leaders free. Read more here.

The castle is beautifully situated in an English park between Göta Canal and Motala stream. In the unfurnished rooms visitors are acquainted with the castle’s dramatic and exciting history. The castle is privately owned but is opened in the summer time by the castle’s caretakers. Read more here.
A private museum, which consists of built environments from the past. The collection contains thousands of everyday items from the late 1800s to the 1980s.
West of the City (Väster om stan)
To the west of the city are some of Linköping’s cosiest tourist destinations. Timeless ceramics from Ledberg’s Pottery. New-baked bread and cosy café at Boställets Vedungsbageri (a wood-oven bakery). Freshly picked tomatoes, vegetables and flowers from the Växthuset Rökinge Gård Nursery. Rustic furnishings, delicacies and newly brewed coffee at Hantverksgården.
