Gamla Linköping – Where history comes to life

Learn more about everything you can discover in Gamla Linköping

Gamla Linköping is one of Östergötland’s biggest tourist destinations and one of Sweden’s most visited museums, with close to 450,000 visitors each year. Here, visitors are transported back in time a hundred years or more to the city, countryside and forest of yesteryear.

The city quarters is home to about one hundred wooden houses, which have been moved here from other parts of Linköping. These lovely historic homes are surrounded by winding cobblestone alleys, courtyards and historic gardens, the perfect setting to settle in and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The houses in the city and on Valla Gård, the rural part of the museum, host 25 different museum environments and exhibitions, where visitors learn about how people lived and worked in the past.

But Gamla Linköping is more than just history – there are also quaint shops, cafés and restaurants, theatre performances and a dance floor. For families with children, the museum offers a wide range of other fun activities, including LasseMaja’s Deckarhus (detective house), animals, mini golf, sledding hills, Linköping’s largest playground, Lill-Valla, and several other play environments. Visitors are welcome to roam freely in the Vallaskogen nature reserve – find your own favourite spot, visit the animals, look for relics from the past or follow one of the walking trails where you learn more about the local nature.
