Göta Canal’s cycling route was named Europe’s best cycling route at the Fiets en Wandelbeurs fair in the Netherlands 2025!

The Göta Canal cycle path passes through Linköping, a fantastic route with beautiful views and many lovely places to discover along the way. Therefore, on this page, we have gathered the information you need to set off on a bike trip along the beautiful Göta Canal.

Two of the sections on the Göta Canal trail go through Linköping, stages 5 and 6. Stage 5 goes between Berg and Borensberg, and stage 6 goes between Asplången and Berg. You can find more information about the different sections below.

Stage 5: Berg – Borensberg

Starting at Berg’s locks, before you start cycling, you can discover the largest lock area of the Göta Canal, including the lock staircase Carl Johan with its seven interconnected locks. Around Berg’s locks, there are also cafés, restaurants, a swimming area, adventure golf, and hostels.

The entire stretch from Berg to Borensberg is along the gravel towing path, which is free from car traffic, making it very suitable for families with children. Here you can also encounter the sheep grazing along the Göta Canal, whose task is to keep the landscape along the canal open.

On the bike ride, you pass, among other places, the Ljungsbro community where the Cloetta factory store is located. In Ljungsbro, you will also find a grocery store, restaurants, and cafés. Other pleasant places to stop along the way are Malfors café and restaurant, Ljungs castle, Brunneby Musteri, and once you reach Borensberg, you can stop at the historic Göta hotel for something to eat or a good night’s sleep.

Stage 6: Berg – Asplången

The sixth stage of the Göta Canal route begins or ends at Berg’s locks, which attract thousands of visitors each year. At the start of the bike ride, you can also swing by Vreta Monastery Church and monastery ruins, one of Sweden’s most interesting medieval churches and Sweden’s oldest known monastery from the 1100s, definitely worth a stop!

From there, you cycle towards Linköping, taking bike paths through the city’s outskirts towards Norsholm. Here you can make a detour into central Linköping, where there is all imaginable service with a wide variety of restaurants, museums, shops, and accommodations. Also take the opportunity to bike along Kinda Canal (commonly known as Stångån) and experience one of the locals’ favorite walking and cycling paths in Linköping.

Once in Norsholm, you will find a lock café and Kapten Bille’s, which has a hostel, restaurant, minigolf, and canoes for rent. On the way from Norsholm, you pass, among other places, the picturesque Brådtom, where there are a café and accommodation in the old lockkeeper’s cottage.

Upon arriving at Hulta lock, you can take a cycleboat as there is no good road connection past the lake Asplången. The boat operates on the lake during the summer months, and tickets can be booked here.
