Gamla Linköping is one of Östergötland’s largest tourist attractions and one of Sweden’s most visited museums, with nearly 500,000 visitors each year.
Here you can make a time travel hundred years back or more and experience living history in the city, countryside, and forest.
In the city quarters, there are about a hundred wooden houses, moved from other parts of Linköping. They are surrounded by cobblestone alleys, backyards, and beautiful historical gardens, where you can sit and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet, far from the hectic everyday life. In the houses in the city and at Valla Farm, the rural part of the museum, you will find about 25 different museum environments and exhibitions, telling about how people worked, lived, and resided in the past.
But everything is not “just” history here – there are also small cozy shops, cafes and restaurants, theater stages, and a dance floor. For children and their families, there is also much more fun, such as LasseMaja’s Detective House, animals, mini golf, sledding hills, Linköping’s largest playground Lill-Valla, and several other play environments.
In Gamla Linköping’s visitor center & museum shop, with delightful 1940s decor, they sell utility and gift items and books related to the museum, some with Gamla Linköping’s own profile illustration. Here you will find unique gifts for both big and small, and you can also buy a paper cone with old-fashioned candies and other goodies! In the visitor center, there are also guidebooks, maps, and other informational material about Gamla Linköping, and you will meet some of the museum hosts, who can answer your questions and give tips on what to see and do.
In Vallaskogen’s nature reserve, you can wander freely and find your own favorite spot, greet the animals, look for ancient relics, or follow one of the trails where you learn more about nature.
Gamla Linköping offers activities, experiences, and events for both children and adults all year round. Strongly expanded offer during Tidernas summer, from the week after Midsummer until mid-August, with many different family activities every day. Lots of genuine Christmas spirit weeks around Christmas, not least during the popular Christmas market.
Accommodation options at hotels and hostels are available in the middle of the museum.
You will find Gamla Linköping 2 km west of central Linköping (signposted from all major roads including E4, exit 111).
The museum area has free entry and is always accessible, year-round, 24/7. The opening hours of other operations vary slightly with the seasons, but many are open all year round. For more information about current opening hours, visit gamlalinkoping.se.
