Pilgrimage from Linköping to Vadstena
Are you looking for a hiking experience beyond the ordinary? Then pilgrimage might be something for you! The pilgrimage route St. Birgitta Ways passes through Linköping with the final destination in Vadstena and the magnificent Monastery Church.
The stretch between Linköping and Vadstena is a beautiful and easy hiking tour that is especially suitable for those who are embarking on pilgrimage for the first time. The trail follows the Östgötaleden from Linköping Cathedral via Vreta Abbey and continues along what we consider the finest part of the Göta Canal. The total distance is 72 km and can be divided into four stages, allowing you to hike the entire route in four days while staying at various pilgrim-friendly accommodations along the way.

What is St. Birgitta Ways?
St. Birgitta Ways is the collective name for all pilgrimage routes leading toward Vadstena and is intended to eventually connect the major pilgrimage destinations in the Nordic countries (Trondheim and Turku) and the rest of Europe. The route is named after one of Sweden’s most famous figures, Saint Birgitta, and leads to the Monastery Church in Vadstena where her relics are preserved.
St. Birgitta Ways is for everyone who wishes to pilgrimage to and from Vadstena regardless of background and motivation. The routes range from steep wilderness trails in deep forests to winding gravel roads through diverse flat landscapes. Almost every daily stage passes different types of waters inviting one for a swim or a pause. Often several times a day, you can rest in a cool church, experiencing tranquility and the wings of history.
