Chocolate City
Come and taste Ljungsbro
How lucky that Linköping is so close to Sweden’s chocolate town Ljungsbro. Perfect trip!
Come and taste Ljungsbro
This is where many of your candy favorites are made and, of course, where you can purchase them for the ultimate candy mix. But yes, as many say, you unfortunately can’t live on candy, but during one day you can treat yourself to both delicious food and delightful activities.
Locally produced chocolate with proud tradition
In 1901, Cloetta moved from Malmö to Ljungsbro. The ambition was for Ljungsbro to become an airy and healthy garden city according to models from England. Cloetta established its own fruit and berry plantations to obtain important raw materials for the production of praline fillings and marmalade. Towards the end of the 1910s, several staff residences were constructed in architect-designed two-family houses with carefully landscaped gardens. Cloetta’s commitment to a good society has a long tradition.
During the 1920s, the vision of Ljungsbro as a garden city was expanded to turn the locality into “the chocolate city of all of Sweden.” At the same time, operations at Cloetta were streamlined, the assembly line principle was introduced in production, and the factory was expanded several times.
The rest, as you know, is history. Cloetta’s Kexchoklad is a Swedish favorite that holds a special place in the hearts of many Swedes. Kexchoklad is a classic that has brightened the everyday life of the Swedish people since 1938. Other well-known brands such as Center, Polly, Plopp, Ahlgrens Bilar, Läkerol, Juleskum, and Gott & Blandat are also favorites of the Swedish people.
Take the right one – take Cloetta!
Did you know that in Sweden, three kexchoklad are eaten every second? And that a kexchoklad accompanied Christer Fuglesang into space? Not so surprising when they are so delicious! Kexchoklad, along with the candy varieties Polly, Center, Plopp, Juleskum, and Ahlgrens bilar, are actually produced in the factory located in Ljungsbro. The factory was built in 1901 by none other than the Cloetta brothers and has remained there since. Next to the factory, you will find their store with a full range of all of Cloetta’s delicious and popular products. In addition to the full range, you can also shop for second-grade and premium confectionery at reduced prices (range and availability may vary).
Since 1901 when Cloetta settled in Ljungsbro, the locality has truly been “Sweden’s chocolate town”, isn’t it worth a visit?
Bergs locks – Linköping’s own oasis
Ljungsbro’s good neighbor is called Göta Canal. Bergs locks are Göta Canal’s largest attraction with many thousands of visitors every year. The fantastic lock staircase Carl Johan, with its seven interconnected locks, raises or lowers the boats a full 18.8 meters between Roxen and Bergs guest harbor. During the summer, thousands of boats pass through Göta Canal, and it is truly a spectacle to see how the masses of water flow in the locks!

Vreta Abbey Church and Church Ruin
At the entrance to Berg’s locks next to Vreta Abbey Church, you will find the ruins of Sweden’s first monastery, founded as a Benedictine nunnery. Vreta Abbey Church and ruin are situated with sweeping views over the Östgöta plain and are a popular destination. Here, you can visit the church with its exciting history, wander in the beautiful monastery ruin, visit the Monastery House with its collection of memorable stone finds, or enjoy a moment in the leafy park by the monastery area’s summer-open café. In summer, guided tours are also conducted in the area!

Göta Canal Cycle Route
Through Ljungsbro passes the fifth stage of the Göta Canal Cycle Route, a fantastic trail with beautiful views and many lovely places to discover along the way. In 2025, it was also named Europe’s best cycle route. Follow the link to find the information you need to set out on a cycling excursion along the beautiful Göta Canal.

Monastery Beer at an Award-Winning Brewery
Swedish chocolate and Belgian beer. A perfect combination. In Ljungsbro and in close proximity to Vreta Monastery, lies the award-winning brewery Vreta Klosters Bryggeri, which specializes in craft beers of the Belgian type. Here, brewery tours with beer tastings are offered, along with farm sales of strong beer, and there is a taproom with food, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options. Vreta Kloster Bryggeri also continuously organizes live performances and a music, culture, and beer festival.
More goodness to discover
And as if all this weren’t enough, there’s even more to explore in the area around Ljungsbro and Berg’s locks. It’s not too late for a round of golf or enjoy a good meal at Vreta Klosters Golf Club. Another foodie tip is Malfors café and restaurant beautifully situated right next to the Göta Canal. If you’re feeling active, you can take a trip to Ljungsbro Activity Park. There’s something for everyone here with a large skate park, swings, footgolf, military obstacle course, senior gym, barbecue corner, DJ booth, and an agility-inspired course for dogs. Or bring your newly purchased confectionery finds and feast on them in the well-organized and accessible nature reserve Motala Ströms Ravin located just outside the Ljungsbro community. Here you can visit a damp deciduous forest in a partially dried-up riverbed that evokes associations with the Amazon rainforest. If you’d rather experience an 18th-century castle, head to Ljung’s Castle, where the most famous owner is Axel von Fersen the Younger. Take part in guided tours or outdoor walks, exhibitions, chamber music, and lectures.
And psst… Right next to Ljungsbro lies Linköping with plenty more to discover!
If you are coming by car from E4 south or north, take the Linköping north exit towards Bergs slussar and then turn towards Ljungsbro. A perfect detour to replenish your chocolate supply as you whiz by!
From Bergs slussar, it’s only a quarter of an hour’s bike ride from Ljungsbro – and for a large part, you cycle along the beautiful Göta canal!
If you prefer to take the bus, you can take Östgötatrafiken’s line 521 or 522 from Bergs slussar/Vreta Klosters kyrka or Resecentrum and some of the departures stop directly outside the Cloettabutik in Ljungsbro. Otherwise, get off at Ljungsbro bus station and walk the last bit.
