Longer hikes
It doesn’t take much to enjoy the beautiful nature we have in Linköping – possibly a pair of comfortable shoes and some snacks. That’s it! Then it’s just a matter of heading out. But to make it a little easier for you on your adventure, we have compiled some hikes for those looking for longer and more challenging hiking tours.
1. Östgötaleden between Vidingsjö Exercise Center and Bjärka Säby
Hike Östgötaleden between Vidingsjö Exercise Center and Bjärka Säby. You will pass through a varied landscape with oak groves, large oaks, beautiful lock environments in Kinda Canal, to name a few. Here is a perfect combination of the best Linköping’s nature has to offer – oak landscape, castles, canal, and proximity to the city. A tip is to make a small detour to Hjortkällan, the ancient home at Bjärka-Säby, and the new castle Bjärka Säby.
The trail is a stretch of Östgötaleden of about 19 km and is easy to moderately difficult. There are barbecue areas, shelters, toilets, and a summer café (The New Castle Bjärka Säby) along the trail. Bus connections are also available in several places. Read more about the hike here!

2. Long Hike from Harvestad/Ullaberg to Old Linköping
The hike goes from Harvestad in southern Linköping through Ullaberg, Ullstämmaskogen, Ekängsdalen, Vidingsjöskogen, Tinnerö, and finishes in Vallaskogen and Old Linköping. A hike that covers several types of nature with both deep coniferous forest, lovely oak pastures, and cozy bird lakes, perfect for those who want a hike that is relatively flat and easy to walk but still a bit longer distance since the hike is 16 kilometers. Find a map of the hike here!
At the entrances to the different areas and reserves, there are often barbecue areas, picnic tables, and in some places dry toilets (Ullaberg, Ekängsdalen, Fröberget) and water toilets in Vidingsjö Exercise Center and Old Linköping.

The hike starts at the bus stop at Harvestad Gård. Turn right onto the gravel road. Follow it for one kilometer and you will reach the car park for the Ullaberg and Mossen bird lake area. Continue another 700 meters and you will arrive at the rest area and entrance for the area. In front of you is the bird lake. Follow the orange-marked trail to the left into the pasture. Follow it for a few kilometers. At one point, the trails divide and there are orange arrows both straight ahead and to the left. Choose the straight-ahead path. Cross the long boardwalk that goes over the water. When you reach the gravel road, turn left onto it. Follow it a few hundred meters until you reach a barbecue area. Turn right and continue following the orange markings. Now you have water on your left side. Walk a few hundred meters until you reach an information sign that says “röda slingan.” Now follow the red marking through Ullstämma Forest Reserve. That trail is a few kilometers long. Finally, you will come to a new information sign. Here, many paths meet, so it’s easy to make a mistake. But keep left here, and now start following the orange markings. After about 1 km you will reach the rest area and entrance at Ekängsdalen. Continue following the orange marking. It should now be followed for the rest of the hike. After a few kilometers, you’ll reach Vidingsjö exercise center. Pass it and continue toward Tinnerö. You enter the Tinnerö nature reserve, and the trail winds a little south and then turns north. At “Karlaplan/Djurgården” in the northern part of the reserve, you pass a large car park and bus stop. Continue the trail westward. You pass a tunnel and now enter Vallaskogen nature reserve. Continue following the orange markings, and finally, you’ll arrive at the city quarters in the open-air museum Gamla Linköping.
Feel free to use naturkartan.se to see where facilities such as barbecue and rest areas are located. Also, activate it so you can see your position on the map, making it easy to navigate.
Take the bus to the stop Harvestad position A or position B in southern Linköping. The hike starts here. The hike ends in Gamla Linköping and from here buses depart from the stop Gamla Linköping position A or position B.
3. Hiking Stora Vidingsjörundan and southern Tinneröstigen
The hike goes on trails and paths that are used by many hikers and exercisers and are relatively even but have sections with more stones and roots. It is a long tour that can be hiked in one day if desired or split into two days with overnight stays in shelters or tents in areas that are not nature reserves.
The hike is approximately 23 kilometers that takes you through large parts of the natural area. The tour covers large parts of Vidingsjöskogen with all sub-areas and the southern and middle parts of Tinnerö. A hike through coniferous forests, wetland areas, and oak landscapes with pastures. You can find the map of the hike here!

This description starts from Vidingsjö Motionscentrum and heads towards Ullaberg to finish with Tinnerö and then back to Vidingsjö Motionscentrum. Start at Vidingsjö Motionscentrum and follow the green markings (LOK-milen). Follow it all the way to the vicinity of Ullaberg where you turn off LOK-milen at a gravel road and instead follow the gravel road up to the entrance to the Ullaberg wetland area. At the barbecue area, start following the orange markings that lead you on a path near the water at Ullaberg. Follow that path for about 1 kilometer until you come to a junction where Östgötaleden splits. Follow the marking that turns left. You will come out to a gravel road between Svennersborg and Kärr. After about 200 meters, turn left and follow the orange markings up into the forest and follow the edge of the Mossen wetland area. After a kilometer, you will reach an information sign about the Ullstämmaskogen Nature Reserve loop which is marked in red. Now follow that trail through the reserve. After about 2 kilometers, the reserve ends, and you come to a new information board. Here, you start following the green markings (LOK-milen) again and follow it all the way back to Vidingsjö Motionscentrum. On the way, you pass over Ekängssjön and a bit through the Vidingsjöskogens Nature Reserve. Once back at Vidingsjö Motionscentrum, follow signs towards Tinnerö. Pass the site Fröberget with the spectacular insect hotel. Follow the gravel road until you come to an information board named “Södra rundan.” Turn left through a passage and over a creek. Now follow the red-marked Tinnerö Trail. Follow it past “Stora Tallen” and round Rosenkällasjön. At the parking and information site “Dämmet,” turn left and continue following the red-marked Tinnerö Trail. Pass the parking/information board at Tinnerö Gravfält/Tinnerö northern. After a while, you will return to the information board named “Södra rundan.” Here, stop following the red markings and go on the gravel road towards Fröberget. After Fröberget, continue back to Vidingsjö Motionscentrum. The tour ends.
Feel free to use naturkartan.se to see where amenities such as barbecue areas and rest places are located. Also, enable it so you can see your position on the map, making it easy to navigate.
